The metaphor of “The Second Arrow” represents the self-inflicted pain that follows an initial hurt.

A Buddhist teaching goes something like this: Suffering and pain are unavoidable in life. This is the first arrow. The second arrow is everything added to it: anger, resentment, self-pity, envy, lies, ego, and more.  A person’s inner voice and outward actions can either allow them to endure the pain or add additional suffering to the event, the second arrow.

"Second Arrow” is from the series, “Untangling Our Roots”, which explores the evolution from childhood beliefs and cultural influences to developing a unique path and voice as an adult. Each painting in the series addresses a different universal struggle and is infused with a solitary figure, enigmatic nature as a healing and guiding force, and/or spiritual and cultural symbolism. This series strives to embody mystery, beauty, exploration, and discovery.
